Short Synopsis
How much are you willing to give up for freedom?
In 1994, a significant conflict arose between the Cuban populace and their government. Jorge Lluvet, one of their own, deftly worked within the communist system to secure the escape of his loved ones from Cuba. This perilous endeavor included risking his own life and that of his wife Tammy and his 4-year-old daughter Lily as they traveled 90 miles to attain freedom.
In 1994 Malecon, Cuba, a riot led by Jorge Lluvet, Nachi, and July gains momentum as the poverty-stricken Cuban people rally behind them. Nachi and July step in to save Jorge when things get dire. Meanwhile, Tammy and her daughter, Lily, search fruitlessly for food. Fidel Castro's announcement of reopening Cuban borders shakes the community, revealing Jorge as Fidel's driver.
Davel and July secretly plot their escape as they flirt with a receptionist at a hospital to secure potassium bags. In a safe house, Tammy, Jorgito, Lily, Nachi, Pepa, Gigi, Davel, and July plan their perilous 90-mile journey to Key West by boat. Tomas, known as the Butcher of the block, disrupts their escape with limited food supplies.
As they scramble for essentials like gasoline and a compass, they face challenges, including Alex navigating Havana's underground gay club. Tammy seeks guidance from Yoruba, their spiritual leader, and tensions escalate during Davel's risky mission for potassium bags. Rene and Daniel, Tammy's family, express their intentions to join the escape. Jorgito and Nachi negotiate for a boat, ultimately obtaining one.
On departure day, they load supplies and set sail, facing engine troubles, storms, and heartbreaking losses, with July and Tomas meeting tragic fates. Rowing onward with unwavering determination, they find solace in dolphins and city lights on the horizon. Their desperate cries for help are answered by rescue teams, offering relief and a glimmer of hope for their uncertain future. "90 Miles" is a gripping tale of resilience, sacrifice, and the indomitable human spirit as brave individuals risk everything for a chance at freedom.
